Uganda is one of the country’s gifted with the endangered mountain gorillas apart from Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Mountain gorillas in Uganda inhabit Mgahinga national park and Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.
Mountain gorillas are the world’s largest living primates that live in tropical rainforests of East and Central Africa. They live in groups of 5 p to 30 individuals dominated by a silver back that controls all the group activities including foraging time, resting time and so much more.
Gorilla trekking permit
The Uganda wildlife authority is the organization responsible for the sale of mountain gorilla trekking permits per day, gorilla permits can be issued from UWA offices in Kampala or you can alternatively buy online from their website.
A gorilla permits is a card given allowing one to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking can be done in only two national parks in Uganda that is Bwindi impenetrable forest national park with several habituated gorilla families and Mgahinga gorilla national park with one habituated gorilla family.
Gorilla permits must always be booked in advance of 3-6 months prior to arrival in the country this is because of very high demand especially during the peak season even sometimes during the low season.
Uganda gorilla permits used to cost $600 but prices will change from of 1st July 2020, all Uganda gorilla permit are to be sold at $700 per permit in Bwindi National Park and Mgahinga National Park without low season discounts. According to the announcement by UWA, foreign residents working in Uganda and the rest of East Africa will buy a gorilla permit for $600 while for nationals and the rest of Africa remained at $70 covering Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and Burundi citizens looking to see gorillas in the wild.
Gorilla habituation permit
Gorilla habituation can be described as the process of making mountain gorillas get used to human presence, this is usually done for a period of about 2-3 years until the mountain gorilla family undergoes a mocking exercise and if they pass the exercise then the group will be opened up for trekking.
Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is the only national park in the world offering visitor a chance to join rangers and researchers in their day to day work of habituation a gorilla family. A maximum number of only 4 people will be allowed to participate in gorilla habituation process, this is far better than gorilla trekking as you get to spend 4 hours with mountain gorillas unlike gorilla trekking where you spend only an hour.
The gorilla habituation permits in Uganda costs $1500 per person per trekking. Habituation permits must also always be booked in advance to avoid disappointment in the last minute.Tags: Travel Blog
