Just like gorilla trekking in Rwanda, hiking up Mountain Bisoke takes place in the Volcanoes national park, with a briefing at the Kinigi park headquarters as early as 8:00 am. You will set off with your Rwanda safaris vehicle to the hike starting point. After the briefing, meet your guides and porters (to be hired at 10$-20$ per day).
Mount Bisoke is one of the highest mountain ranges among the 8 volcanoes of the Virunga Conservation Area lying across the East and Central Africa. The mountain stands at 3,711 meters high with a crater lake and beautiful vegetation that give beautiful scenery at the top.
It is found along the border of Democratic republic of Congo and Rwanda located besides volcanoes national park in Ruhengeri – Northern Province of Rwanda.
A day hike on Mount Bisoke requires one to move along the steep slopes that are densely closed with the equatorial rain forest and some alpine meadows for nearly 4 hours to reach the summit and other 2 hours of descent.
However, experienced hikers take only 3 hours to reach the top and 1 hour to slope down, thus hiking to the top of mount Bisoke and back is a one-day activity.
The hike starts with a briefing followed by the real hiking adventure, commencing at exactly 8:00am. A porter can be hired along if you like one to help carry your luggage while the hiking gears are provided by the park.
Hiking Mount Bisoke is not that tough but may be very hectic for the inexperienced hikers since the mountain is on a high elevation that requires hikers to have a lot of energy to climb and to walk through the whole excursion.
Climbing to the top of this mountain can be a whole day adventure depending on weather, speed of trekkers and the stops you make while climbing but at the end of the day you will realize that the hike is worth all efforts.
